OAK HILL COMMUNITY COUNCIL
STEERING MEETING MINUTES
9-October-2006

 

1. Everyone in attendance introduced themselves as follows: Ronnie Connell, Donna Batson, Linda Piebenga, Kit Sixel, Laura Hartman, Kyna Langhorne, Kathy Grey, Stoner, Michelle Service, Pamela Frye.

2. Minutes of previous meeting were approved. They are located on the oakhillschool.info web site.

3. Updated community council rosters were passed out.

4. Committee updates:

• Kitchen (Heather Henderson): Kitchens have been cleaned and items for various organizations (church, various school activities) have been segregated.
• Garden (Shannon Poynter): Shannon is working with lower school teachers and obtaining seeds, etc. to work the garden into the lower school curriculum. She is still following through with the School Garden Project.
• BooDoo (Laura Hartman): BooDoo will be 2 nights, the Friday and Saturday before Halloween. It will include a Haunted Hayride to be run by the high school seniors, a Trunk or Treat, with prizes for the best decorated trunk. We need a lot of OHS family involvement to make BooDoo a success. So far, 4 participants have signed up for the Trunk or Treat. They are working to get Buster the Pony & KDUK to broadcast from here. There will be games inside the gym for the younger kids, with a cake walk to be run by Debra Fralick.  Parking will be at LCC and people will walk to campus. The issue of path lighting was mentioned, and will be looked into.
• Booster Club (Kathy Grey): The Booster Club is looking for a less expensive source for supplies. The goal is to raise $1000 this year. It was mentioned that there is a snow cone machine that hasn’t been used yet, which could be used for fundraising by the Booster Club, and also for BooDoo.
• Middle School Community Building Rep (Michelle Service): On October 20, there will be a parent sponsored trip to the corn maze. It was brought up that there is a school dance that night, which apparently was not on the calendar. The dance will be rescheduled.
• Poinsettia/wreath committee (Pamela Frye/Linda Piebenga): Due to apparent waning interest in wreaths over the past few years, a decision has been made to sell poinsettias as well as wreaths. Tammy called Johnson’s and found that with better pricing, we can do better than last year on sales. This year we will experiment with parent delivery to houses or businesses. This will be a good way for parents to get in their volunteer hours. The name of the sale will be changed to Holiday instead of Christmas sale. The deadline to place our order is October 27. It was suggested that advertising could be done with alumni or in the LCC Torch.
• Lower School Rep/Escrip (Kit Sixel): Escrip signup will be on Thursday morning, Oct. 12.
• Ronnie asked all pool reps to send group emails to all committee heads, asking them to update them when tasks have been completed, so that everyone knows that birthdays, etc., are covered.
• First Fridays were discussed. The first Friday night of each month will have an activity scheduled. This month it was a movie, “Elf”, and approximately 40 people showed up. More parent help is needed for these.
• Faculty/Staff Appreciation: Birthday list is pretty much updated. Some people are opting not to participate. People working long term on the grounds upgrade should be added to the list, and Josna is working to obtain their information.
• Pizza Committee: Burrito Boy is willing to do a burrito day in place of Pizza Day. After discussion, it was determined that for many students, Pizza Day is sacred. Julie Boffing will investigate the possibility of having burritos on a different day or for a different venue.
• After School Homework Club (Linda Piebenga): There was no response to the notice re.this and so it will not be pursued further.
• Volunteer (Linda Piebenga): O’Hara monitors volunteer hours on an Excel spreadsheet. They require 36 hours from a 2 parent family, and 18 hrs from a single parent family. Families can pay $10/hr in lieu of performing the service. Families track their service on the honor system and bring in their own hours once a month to the office. Linda said families can email or drop sheets at the office with Josna.
