Recognizing
connections among mathematical topics and between mathematical topics and other disciplines
helps students create a world view consistent with both a technical and liberal arts
education.
The study of mathematics is represented by three broad categories: skills, concepts,
and applications.
Performing mathematical skills and understanding the theoretical basis of these skills,
and applying these skills and concepts inside and outside the classroom are the fundamental
goals.
Communicating mathematical reasoning is an essential component of a student’s ability
to use his or her knowledge.
