English - This year, students in this
class consider historical concepts through American literature. With an
emphasis on both creative and analytical writing, students improve their
vocabulary and reading comprehension while considering how history has
shaped literature and vice versa. Designed as a writing workshop
seminar, the class is built on student leadership and collaboration. In
addition to literary analysis, concepts that are frequently considered
include: freedom, the American Dream, and selective memory.
Overall, students gain a deeper appreciation for the power of influential
writing. Texts include: The Scarlet Letter, The Last of the
Mohicans, The Confessions of Nat Turner, Gone With the Wind, East of Eden,
Slaughterhouse Five, On the Road, The Things They Carried and Black
Hawk Down. |
